The novel 'Most of the River's Course' by Algerian author Saïd Khattabi has won the 2026 International Prize for Arabic Fiction. The novel tells two parallel stories in Algiers: that of an eye doctor who uses corneas from the bodies of the dead, and that of her father, a former resistance fighter accused of treason. Through these intertwined narratives, the novel traces Algeria's history from World War II to the 'Black Decade' of the 1990s. Saïd Khattabi, an Algerian writer and journalist based in Slovenia, is the author of several award-winning novels. This is the second time he has reached the prize's final stages.
