North Africa Weather Crisis: Floods and Alerts

North Africa is experiencing unstable weather conditions. Tunisia, Libya, Morocco, and Algeria have raised their weather alert levels, with schools closed in some areas.

Morocco continues evacuation operations in the Ksar el-Kebir region due to flooding caused by rising water levels in a northern dam. The regional Ministry of Education has suspended classes for a week due to adverse weather conditions.

The city saw a significant rise in water levels due to heavy rainfall, making access to some neighborhoods nearly impossible. Videos showed volunteers arriving on jet skis and kayaks to rescue families trapped by floodwaters in their homes.

Orange Alert in Tunisia

Tunisia's National Institute of Meteorology issued the highest level of warning on Saturday evening in 20 governorates, declaring a wide-scale alert due to expected dangerous weather on Sunday, including strong winds and heavy thunderstorms.

The institute stated that the weather will feature strong to very strong winds reaching 110 km/h, along with heavy rain in the north. The orange alert was issued in 20 governorates, including the capital region, the north, and the south.

Four governorates remain under a yellow alert, requiring caution during weather-related activities.

Warnings in Algeria

Algerian authorities have once again called on citizens to exercise extreme caution due to weather anomalies and strong winds in several provinces.

The General Directorate of Civil Protection advised avoiding non-essential travel and staying away from under-construction buildings, trees, and utility poles.

Since January 27, one person has died and 20 others have been injured due to the severe weather.

School Closures in Libya

The Tripoli municipality announced a suspension of classes on Sunday due to expected adverse weather conditions and to ensure student safety. Citizens were urged to follow safety guidelines to protect themselves.
